The self-confessed “adaptable, accommodating and genuine” team at John Gehrig Wines know better than most that a beautiful wedding starts with a beautiful couple… and is helped to the finish line by a match-made-in-heaven pairing with the right venue.
Tell us about the John Gehrig Wines venue.
We’re a fifth-generation family-run winery, with generation six assisting where they can! The beautiful setting [sprawling] 250 acres of vineyard gives you some stunning location [options] for your wedding ceremony and photos, and the reception can take place in our charming heritage-listed winery cellar door.
Why are you passionate about what you do?
[We love] the diversity each day brings - there’s never a dull moment. From meeting customers through the cellar door and hearing their stories, showing potential couples through our beautiful vineyards for their special day to operating a grape crusher or driving a tractor cutting the grass for an upcoming event, operating a family business you live and breathe all parts of the business – as we say, the good, the bad and the ugly! Good certainly outweighs the other two.
What do you think makes a great wedding?
That’s a tricky one, as each wedding can be great in its own way. I guess it’s all in the planning stage, ensuring your dream can be a reality and is within your reach..
What was the most memorable wedding you’ve worked on and why?
Another tricky one! They’re all memorable as they match each and every couple’s personality in their own unique way. I always enjoy seeing the joy in the couple after the ceremony and getting positive feedback from the event we have hosted for their special day. Also, watching our daughter smiling and having fun helping me to set the reception table decorations!
What’s the most wonderful thing about getting married in the Rutherglen region?
The diversity and unique locations, beautiful surroundings, passionate, experienced vendors and great weather! And of course, an amazing food and wine culture.
What are your top tips for couples planning their wedding?
If you’re planning a destination wedding, look for a venue operator who understands what you want and can deliver your vision. It’s your day! You need to be comfortable and relaxed, not having added stress in the process of planning your day. [Additionally], make sure all lines of communication are open and everyone understands the vision.
